of the Patna Vicariate. As is the case with many of the stations, the activities of our Missionaries started in the Cantonment, so that as late as 1928 the only Church at Jhansi was that of the Cantonment. Gradually, however, Jhansi being also a Railway Station, the number of Catholics who were not in the army increased. Fr. Francis of Aspiro, then in charge of Jhansi, wrote to the Superior General at Rome on the 20th December, 1893 that there were at that time 450 Catholics, of whom “100 were soldiers, 100 Europeans, 100 Indians, 150 Anglo-Indians”, and that three years earlier Bishop Pesci built a priest’s House, “nice
and sufficiently big …. about a mile from the church.” Between 1915 and 1917 there were at Jhansi about 600 Catholics employed in the Railway.
As far back as 1909 Fr. D’Almeida a Diocesan priest “had initiated a movement for collecting sufficient funds for the erection in the vicinity of Gaddia(Ghariya) of a small Chapel for the use of the many Catholics who resided in that locality. But a few years later it was generally- realized that the Railway colony close to Gaddia was growing in numbers and importance and that the time had arrived to consider seriously the question of providing it with a church and a chaplain of its own. The result was that the original idea was merged into that finally adopted, viz., to erect a church which would be large enough to suit the needs of the Railway employees living both in Gaddia and the Railway Lines. The number of the faithful having thus considerably increased, and the cantonment church, with a limited accommodation for about 250 persons, being too far for the greater number of the Railway Catholics, it was proposed in 1917 to build a church for the Railway Colony. The new Church was blessed and dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua on the 12th February, 1928 by the Most Rev Angelo Poli, assisted by the Very Rev. Fr. Francis, O.F.M. Cap., then Vicar General of the Diocese of Allahabad, and the Very Rev. Fr. Leo, then Superior Regular of the Maltese Capuchins of Sagar. The Church cost Rs. 42,823, of which Rs. 5,000 were paid by His Lordship, Angelo Poli Rs. 12,000 by the G.I.P. Railway, and the
balance of Rs. 25,823 by the faithful.
The cathedral parish has 3 religious communities working in different areas: Education, social service, and looking after orphans. St. Anthony’s Cathedral Parish has an intermediate college established in the year 1988. The Cathedral College, specifically striving for the education of Catholic children of nearby parishes.
