St. Rita’s Mission/Shrine, Manikpur.

It was visited from Allahabad in the early part of this century. In November,1928, the Very Rev. Fr. Leo of Malta, O.F.M. Cap., sent Bro. Liberatus
of Catania, 0. F. M. Cap., to work among the aborigines of Manikpur. Bro.
Liberatus worked here alone for a year supplying medicines free of charge to the sick, curing them of their diseases, instructing them and baptizing very many dying babies. In December, 1929, Fr. Leo put Fr. Andrew of Malta, in charge of Manikpur with Bro. Liberatus as his assistant. After many troubles, Fr. Andrew succeeded in getting a lease of a piece of land, where he built the
present Priest’s House with a tiny Chapel.

The first Mass was said here by Fr. Andrew on the 25th December, 1930. This house cost Rs. 4,600 which were paid by benefactors in Malta. The mission
became part of Jhansi diocese in the year 1954. At present, the mission has a small parish, St. Rita’s Shrine, St. Rita’s Convent, St. Rita’s School and St. Rita’s Hospital. Extensive roads were built by Fr. Michael in the small city of Manikpur and this contributed towards the development of the area. Fr. M Joseph constructed a hospital which became a lifeline for the extremely poor and needy people.

Sr. Dr. Mary Rose CSN did a marvelous 40 years of service to humanity in the field of healthcare that she has become a living legend today. A junior high school running for the last 40 years was raised to a high school by Fr. D. Francis. He also opened an English medium school. In the initial stages of the mission,
Daughters of the Sacred Heart (DSH) from Malta worked in the mission with Maltese Capuchin Fathers. Congregation of the Sisters of Nazareth (CSN) pursued both in the healthcare and education ministry and performed a commendable service. Congregation of the Mission Sisters of St. Teresa from Quilon came to the service of the mission in the year 2013.
