Sacred Heart Parish
Sacred Heart Church situated in Cantonment area has a very profound history of over 125 years. It is one of the oldest churches in northern India. This church built by Britishers is a beautiful model of architect.
The church was built in the cantonment area with the assistance of army personnel to attend to the spiritual needs of the Christians in the army. A chaplain resided at 52 Cantonment. To help the chaplain, some Catholics who had no shelter were given place behind the bungalow of 52 Cantonment for their residence. Thus, a few Catholic families started staying in the vicinity of the church. Baptism records for the whole city of Jhansi were maintained at Sacred Heart Church until the St Anthony’s Church was built in railway colony in 1928. In 1979, St. Jude’s Shrine was erected out of Sacred Heart Parish, and the faithful residing at Civil Lines were directed to be the parishioners of the Shrine parish.
Centenary of the establishment of the church was celebrated with great enthusiasm in 1994 during the tenure of Fr. Michael Kaithathara. From the year 1990, both CJ sisters from Saint Francis Convent, Cantt and CTC sisters from Hansari became members of this parish. Presently Fr. Mathew Adhopillil is the
parish priest.
