St. Francis Xavier’s Mission Babina
Babina is a military station about 25 kms from Jhansi. Babina is an abbreviation of British Army Based In North Asia. This mission was established to look after the spiritual needs of the army personnel. Priests started to
stay here in a military bungalow from 1942. There was neither a Church nor presbytery at that time. A primary school was looked after by the diocese with
the help of CSST sisters from Ernakulum. These sisters served in the military school from July 1958 and finally withdrew their services in May 29, 1963 due to the unnecessary interference and conditions imposed by the Army.
Nevertheless, the priest continued to serve the Catholics in the regiment. Later in 1964, it became impossible for the priest as well to remain in the military bunglow. Later in 1964, the diocese purchased a piece of land for Rs. 27,000/- (¾ acres) to construct a priest house and a church. On February 11, 1968, foundation stone of the church was laid by the Brigadier Rick and Bishop Mudartha with the help of Fr. Sebastian Panackal, constructed St. Xavier’s Church in Babina, and the church got blessed on December 21, 1969. Fr. Gabriel Chakkalakkal succeeded Fr. Sebastian and looked after the military school.Fr. Joseph Palakudy succeeded him and Fr. CJ Francis took charge as the parish priest on September 4, 1980. Fr. Peter Selvanathan joined him for a while, soon to be replaced by Fr. Peter Anthony. Fr. Joseph D’Aureo was appointed as the parish priest in August 1986 and he continued till 1993.
On July 1, 1993, Fr. Maria Francis was appointed as the parish priest and he proposed to the bishop to construct a school for the parish. Necessary formalities were fulfilled. In 1995, he was appointed as the first principal of St. Xavier’s English Medium School, Babina. On September 25, 1997, Fr. Vincent Albert was made the parish priest and principal of St. Xavier’s Primary School as both civil and military students enrolled themselves in the school. Meanwhile, the bishop invited the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk (OSU) to serve in the parish and in the school. It was during the time of Fr. Kulmi, the sisters established themselves. At Nayakheda Mission, Fr. Anastacius Kulmi by constructing a school for the higher section of the Babina St. Xavier’s School. Fr. Denis Mascarenhas gave a good shape to the school and brought about various reforms in the place. It was Fr. Vianney who started to take the students from K.G. to tenth Std. and worked for the CBSE affiliation for the school. In 2016 Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo offered their assistance in this place and offered their sisters to help Fr. Vianney. Fr. Vianney constructed a convent and accommodated the sisters by 2016.
